Sugar Quay, Plymouth

Waterfront regeneration company Sutton Harbour Holdings plc (SHH) is awaiting the outcome of a planning application, submitted in July, to create a striking building on the prime Sugar Quay site fronting Plymouth’s historic waterfront.

As part of the company’s Vision for Sutton Harbour, SHH plc aims to create a landmark building offering 7 to 19 storeys of high quality residential apartments in staggered heights, and a ground floor featuring commercial retail and restaurant units, with an enhanced south west-facing urban realm for public use.

Clarkebond has been appointed to provide a range of engineering services on the scheme including civils, structural, ground engineering, flood risk assessment and a site waste management plan.

The design of the building includes a distinctive arrangement of 175 apartments over 7 to 19 staggered floors in a T-shape so that homes will benefit from increased natural sunlight, as well as views over the Marina at Sutton Harbour and Plymouth Sound.

The ground floor will accommodate 2,900 m2 of commercial space featuring a south west-facing public piazza on the waterfront with attractive new public spaces to draw in visitors and boost footfall, increasing the vibrancy and vitality of the area.

There would also be an underground car park for approx. 100 vehicles.

Subject to planning permissions being granted by Plymouth City Council later this year, SHH plc aims to develop the first phases of the scheme in time for the Mayflower 400 celebrations in 2020 so that part of the building’s structure can be used as a viewing platform and exhibition space, with the full development completed by 2022.
