Peninsula Dental School

The £31m development of Peninsula Dental Schools, the first new dental schools in the UK for 40 years will provide new facilities across three sites for Plymouth Hospitals, Plymouth Teaching PCT and Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust.

The Devonport school comprises a two storey steel frame structure which occupies part of the Cumberland Medical Campus, providing 2,500m2 of teaching accommodation, 43 dental chairs, seminar rooms, a teaching clinic, CSSD, a radiology department, offices and ancillary accommodation.

The existing site provided significant challenges as a result of the variable geology, existing archaeological features and potential of unexplained ornance.

The Truro facility is constructed on a brownfield site as an extension to the existing Knowledge Spa, and comprises 2,400m2 of new build over four floors.  The steel frame building with composite floors provides 2,400m2 of accommodation which includes 32 dental chairs arranged in groups of eight for training purposes, four single surgeries for individual requirements, and research and office provision.

The project was let with a contractual requirement to achieve BREEAM Very Good, but the Contractor, Client and professional team worked together to achieve BREEAM Excellent.
