A mixed retail and residential development in Mill Street, Aberystwyth with a number of interesting engineering features, is now fully open for business.
Clarkebond provided a range of services on the scheme including geo-environmental civil and structural engineering and highways improvements with a new signalised junction. Clarkebond also negotiated with the local authority on several issues to ensure the scheme progressed as required.
The development includes a 60,000 ft2 store for Tesco, a 50,000 ft2 store for M&S , 550 car park spaces and a 8 unit multi-story apartment block.
The Tesco store sits between a ground-floor car park and a roof top car park which is accessed via a spiral ramp rising from the ground-floor. Tesco’s requirement for internal clear spans of 10 x 16 metres was accomodated by the use of a steel frame structure. The M&S store features a glass atrium with 3 levels of travellator providing access to all three floors of the store. Piled foundations were designed to avoid sewers, water courses and other deep lying underground obstructions.
The development site was previously the town centre car park and before that a gas works which left contamination issues. A considerable amount of contamination remediation work was therefore required prior to commencement of construction. Other enabling works included demolition of a rank of terraced houses, council cleaning depot, an old drill hall and a redundant health centre and diversion of a major trunk sewer and a culverted water course. Clarkebond designed temporary works to support Mill St – a major trunk A road alongside the site.
