Llanwern High School
The design of this new school, accommodating 1,450 pupils including a 150-strong sixth form college, comprises two main volumes with curved facades linked by a double height glazed space; a focal point and informal meeting area leading to the more private teaching areas and halls.
The predominantly two storey structure rises to a three storey mass to the north of the site, minimising the total footprint of the development and responding to the surrounding residential areas.
Passive energy measures have been adopted throughout the development such as rainwater harvesting, thermal massing, the maximisation of natural ventilation, and a proposed 20-30% sedum roof to attenuate surface drainage.
