Taking it to the top!

A topping out ceremony was held recently for the new Bridge Street student accommodation building which at 26 storeys high is the tallest building in Cardiff.

Clarkebond provided civil, structural and ground engineering services on the development which comprises over 450 student bed spaces with retail and commercial units, and will have a health centre on the ground floor and a garden on the roof.

A fascinating insight into the construction and design of this impressive structure can be seen in this short video which the Clarkebond project team produced as part of their BIM (Building Information Management) design process.

The open plan design of the mixed use space on the ground floor, featuring large expanses of glazing, has been an interesting challenge for the structural engineers.  A minimal number of structural columns will support transfer structures which in turn will support the residential areas above.

The scheme is located on a brownfield site within a conservation area and particular attention has been paid to ensure the sensitive retention of existing historic commercial buildings which will be incorporated into the ground floor mixed-use space.

Clarkebond has carried out ground investigations for geotechnical and geo-environmental aspects, and is preparing a full assessment and report, including measures to deal with backfilled basements from previous development on the site.

The building is due for completion in August ahead of the 2018/19 academic year.
