Congratulations to Clarkebond Engineer James Edmonds – fastest British backstroke swimmer at FINA World Masters Swimming Championships 2017

Clarkebond Principal Structural Engineer, James Edmonds, based in the Bristol office travelled to Budapest last week, to compete in the FINA World Masters Swimming Championships and gave an outstanding performance as the fastest Brit across all age groups in both the 50 m and 100 m backstroke events.

In James own words:

I travelled to Budapest on Friday 18th of August to compete in the FINA World Masters Swimming Championships, I competed in the 30-35 year age category in the 50m and 100m backstroke events. I arrived at the competition ranked 14th and 11th respectively for each event.  On Saturday morning I raced my preferred event, the 100m backstroke and improved my ranking by 3 places, finishing in 8th position.

I had a relaxing Saturday afternoon to prepare for my 50m backstroke on Sunday morning, in this event I also was delighted to move up the rankings by 6 places, finishing in 8th place, but my time was within 0.1 seconds of my personal best so I was much happier with this result; I was also fastest Brit across all age groups in both events which I was happy with!

To finish my first masters world championships with two top 8 swims with both a past Olympic champion and a past world record holder competing in my age group and events whilst squeezing in training around a full time career I am fairly happy with my achievements, however knowing that my personal best time on the 100m backstroke would have placed me much higher up the results has left me with a renewed determination to train for the European Masters in Kranj, Solvenia next year and the World Masters in South Korea in 2019.

I’m grateful to Clarkebond for their sponsorship and continued support in my swimming career.
