Clarkebond’s hidden contribution to demanding "in the ground project" on historic site

Work is progressing well on a new development on former car park site at West Hoe, Plymouth, which will provide a doctors’ surgery, apartments and four-bedroom townhouses.

Clarkebond have provided civil and structural design services on the £3m 4-storey Pier Street Surgery development which consists of a doctors’ surgery on the lower two floors and 6 private residential flats in the two floors above, although most of the Clarkebond structural designs are now well hidden.

The building is steel framed with precast concrete floors and the top storey has been constructed in timber frame. Adjacent to the doctors’ surgery, there are 8 terraced four bedroom town houses, also designed by Clarkebond, which are of traditional construction with masonry walls and timber floors and roofs.

The whole site has been piled due to the depths of made ground on the site which was turned into a car park after the printing works that was previously there suffered large scale bomb damage during the war.

Clarkebond has provided drainage services for the project which required the installation of an attenuation tank to limit the flows of surface water off site into the public sewer network.

The site is very tight, and all useable space is taken up by the development. It is also located close to the surrounding residential properties therefore Clarkebond has worked closely with the contractor to ensure that the design and methods of construction are sympathetic to the limited working space and close residential properties.

The doctors surgery will provide much needed additional space and new facilities for the area and is due to be completed later this spring.
