Clarkebond appointed to NHS operating theatre project

Clarkebond have been appointed to provide structural and civil engineering consultancy services on a £6m project for Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust.

The project involves converting an existing intensive care unit into two ultra-clean operating theatres, which includes the addition of a large plant room over the theatres to provide space for the stringent M&E requirements of ultra-clean theatres. The existing structure is a concrete encased steel frame building which needed careful assessment to determine its load capacity for the new plant room above. The project will involve connecting the new lightweight steel plant room to the existing concrete encased steel frame which will need additional strengthening of columns and foundations.

The proposed operating theatres are located directly above an existing vehicle undercroft which serves several departments of the main hospital. The site is also situated in the middle of the hospital adjacent to active operating theatres and can only be accessed by a road under the hospital. Noise and vibration must be kept to a minimum by the main contractor so as not to disturb the hospital; Clarkebond has specified low vibration ad noise methods of concrete removal to ensure patients are not disrupted.
Clarkebond is currently preparing drawings for a tender package to be issued shortly.
