Award Recognition for Sustainable Retail Development
A B&Q store that opened last autumn at Cyfarthfa Retail Park, Merthyr Tydfil has won the Property Week Sustainable Achievement Award 2015.
Judges were looking for a building/project, developer, occupier or innovation that has had a positive impact on the environment with tangible evidence of positive environmental impact alongside commercial benefits.
Clarkebond was part of the single shared design team, working with both the developer Hammerson and B&Q to achieve B&Q’s aspirations for this new store which mean that it had to:
- Demonstrate a sustainable approach that is replicable and scalable.
- Meet B&Q’s current operational requirements
- Be flexible and future proof to respond to changing market needs.
- Be commercially viable
The standard of the store’s environmental performance includes being 50% better than the industry benchmark (2010 Part L), achieving a Band A EPC rating, BREEAM Energy Standards in excess of minimum standards for “Outstanding” ratings (min 10 credits for outstanding, 14 currently being secured) and a 23% reduction in embodied energy relative to industry bench mark standards for similar retail developments.
Clarkebond provided civil, structural and geo-environmental services on the development.
