31 Great George Street
31 Great George Street is a seven-storey Category A commercial office building in a prime Bristol location that was first built in 1987 and originally occupied by PwC. Clarkebond was appointed to provide structural engineering services for a complete strip out and refurbishment of the building to create new offices for JLL and Bristol University.
The structural designs included for the removal of entire floors to allow design flexibility and to incorporate a new central open garden with a new glazed rooflight over an atrium. Sections of load bearing walls were removed, headroom into lift lobbies was increased and the height of two structural walls was reduced in the southern wing. Clarkebond also provided advice on structural design requirements for the installation of substantial roof terrace planters.
The new designs included a number of modern and sustainable features, including low-energy lighting and a stack air system. The building aimed to achieve BREEAM Excellent or Outstanding and was Shortlisted for a BCO award in 2018.
